An overview of the future of silk as an industrial fiber addresses fiber properties, advantages, and disadvantages; practical limitations of synthesizing silk and silk-like proteins in transgenic hosts; and difficulties in characterizing the complex hierarchical structure in silk and the poor reproducibility of silk tensile property measurements. Silkworm silk fibers and spider silk fibers exhibit high breaking strength, initial stiffness, and toughness. Introducing transverse anisotropy in fibers and technologies for spinning water insoluble fibers from aqueous solutions via supramolecular liquid crystalline intermediates applies to other polymeric systems as well as manmade silk. numerous refs.
