Polypropylene fibers, which have a nonpolar paraffinic character, are undyeable by conventional bath dyeing processes. Mass coloration includes dispergation and homogenization of pigments or dyes in a polymer before extrusion and spinning. Addition of concentrated dispersions to the polymer occurs by volume or weight dosing machines directly to the extruder or by injection after melting and homogenization. A static or dynamic mixer homogenizes the melt mixture. An introduction to the dyeing of polypropylene fibers addresses exhaust dyeing processes, including the dyeing of chemically and physically modified fibers; pigmentation-mass coloration, including inorganic and organic pigments; preparation of pigment concentrates; and preparation of spun dyed fibers. 5 refs.
