Experiments comparing the dyeing properties of silk proteins produced by silkworms reared on an artificial diet of tofu cake(A) with those produced by silkworms reared on a diet of mulberry leaves (M) dyed raw silk samples with C.I. Acid Orange 7. The sericin content of A samples was 26.0 percent, and that of M samples was 23.7 percent. Equilibrium dye uptake and dyeing rates were similar for A and M silk sericin was approximately 20 percent higher than that of the M silk sericin. The dyeing rate of the A silk sericin, however, was slower than that of the M silk sericin. Sericin samples showed dye uptake three to four times higher than that of fibroin samples. 7 refs.
