Blends of Cellulose with Synthetic Polymers

An investigation into the principles associated with the formation of miscible cellulose and synthetic polymer blends addressed cellulose/polyacrylonitrile, cellulose/polyvinyl alcohol, cellulose/polyvinyl pyrrolidone, and cellulose/poly(4-vinyl pyridine). Differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical relaxation, and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance anaylses characterized blends prepared by regeneration from mixed polymer solutions in dimethylacetamide/lithium chloride or by slow casting solutions in dimethyl sulfoxide/paraformaldehyde. Cellulose/manmade polymer blends were not intractable.
