Acidic degradation of cellulose does not yield cellulose with degrees of polymerization in the range of 25-50 in a predictable or reproducible manner. Activation of cellulose by liquid ammonia treatment increases the rate of hydrolytic degradation in semidiluted hydrochloric acid while reducing the leveling off degree of polymerization. For cottonlinters or microcrystalline Avicel, the degree of polymerization after hydrolysis is 40-50 and the polydispersity is 2.5.
