Presentation at the polyurethanes 2000 conference sponsored by the Alliance for the Polyurethanes Industry focused on maximizing the cost effectiveness of novel systems for manufacturing polyurethane foams without using hydro-chlorofluorcarbon (HCFC) blowing agents. Honeywell's HFC-245fa facilitates the manufacture of foams for building construction and appliance manufacture with fewer problems than HCFs. The company's co-blowing technology uses high levels of water to generate carbon dioxide and results in flams resistant foams that do not form voltaile organic compounds. Blending with water reduces the high vapor pressure of HFC-245fa to facilitate handling in a conventional 16 gage drum. Resultant boardstock laminate foams have superior K-factor ageing performance.
