A review of literature from the 1990s addressing the degradation of polyurethanes (PURs) in a living body focuses on polyol applied polyesterol, polyetherol, and polycarbonate-diols; environmental stress cracking; metal ion catalyzed and enzyme catalyzed oxidation of PURs; and the relationships of the degradation and mechanical properties of PUR to its chemical structure and content of hard and soft segments. A novel PUR containing oligocarbonate segments possesses good mechanical properties and is resistant to oxidative and hydrolytic degradation. Bulk and surface modification, especially heparinization and phospholipidation, are necessary to prepare blood compatible PUR surfaces. 81 refs.
