A wide range of additives can be incorporated into the melt during the extrusion of manmade fibers. Most manmade fibers contain titanium dioxide. Other important additives include those that facilitate filtration during extrusion, improve stability to heat and/or light, whiten or color, and act as flameproofing agents or weighting agents. Antimicrobial agents are also becoming common additives. This review describes additives that confer protection against low temperatures to fibers, phase change materials, electroconductive fibers, fibers resistant to cutting, fibers with deodorant properties, perfumed fibers, chameleon fabrics that change color with light or temperature, additives used in healthcare and medical textiles, additives that confer protection against ultraviolet and electromagnetic radiation, additives that confer opacity to textiles against X-rays, and modifications to fiber geometry and density. 62 refs.
