Reactive printing accounts for approximately 60 percent of world cotton and cellulosic fabric printing. The reaction of the dye molecule to the -OH group in cellulose results in a permanent fixation of the dye molecule to the fabric. The process yields brilliant colors, a soft fabric hand, and excellent washfastness and rubfastness. However, reactive printed cellulosic fabrics have no fastness to hypochlorite or oxidative bleaching and require washing in chlorine-free water. Sodium alginate thickeners are optimal for reactive printing because they provide no free bonding site for the reactive group and are easily washed out after transferring the dye to the substrate.
