Japanese manmade fiber production increased 0.5 percent in 2000 after decreasing in 1998 and 1999. Filament yarn production increased by 7,000 tons to 736,000 tons. Staple fiber production increased by 1,000 tons. Nylon filament yarn production increased 3.7 percent. Production of polyester and cellulosic filament yarns decreased 0.8 percent and 4.9 percent, respectively. Production of acrylic and polyester staple fibers increased 1.3 percent and 1.1 percent, respectively. Production of cellulosic staple fibers decreased 1.9 percent. Nylon staple fiber production decreased 55.6 percent to 4,000 tons. Prices for polyester staple fibers decreased 8 percent from October 2000 to March 2001. A 30 percent decrease in the cost of acrylonitrile resulted in lower acrylic fiber prices during that period.
