World fiber consumption exceeded 60 million tons in 1999 and has increased at an annual rate of 2.5 percent per year during the past 20 years. Polyester surpassed cotton in 2000 as the fiber with the largest market share in the world. Although polypropylene demand is approximately 33 percent of polyester demand, polypropylene demand is increasing. Polyester filament fiber and staple fiber demand increased by 10 percent and 5 percent per year, respectively, from 1990-1999 and will reach 15 million tons and 11 million tons, respectively, in 2005. Capacity utilization was approximately 75 percent for polyester staple fibers and 85 percent for polyester filament yarns in 2000. Capacity utilization will increase for both products through 2005. An overview of developments in fiber geometry addresses new polymers (polytrimethylene terephthalate and polylactic acid) and bicomponent fibers.
