An overview of the world polyester industry and those in Asia and the People's Republic of China addresses technological developments, market capacity, resource availability, and current trends. World production capacity increased 142.8 percent from 1990-1999 at an annual growth rate of 10.4 percent. The growth in Asia was 180 percent during the same period. Asian polyester capacity accounted for 48.85 percent of the total world capacity in 1995 and now accounts for 57.59 percent. Forecasts indicate that world capacity growth will slow to 3.1 percent per year from 2000-2008. China's polyester capacity is expected to reach 5 million tons by 2001. Rapid development of the Chinese industry has relied on imports of equipment and technology. Yizheng Chemical Fibers has attempted to localize the development of new technologies to reduce this reliance.
