Worldwide manmade fiber consumption per capita increased 1 percent annually prior to the Asian economic crisis. Production of all fibers increased 3 percent per year during that period. Acrylic fiber demand increased steadily since 1997. Nylon showed a surge in demand from 1994-1996, followed by slower growth after 1997. Polyester showed similar growth trends as nylon but at a stronger rate of 8 percent annually. Total demand should decrease 1.3 percent worldwide and 3.3 percent in Asia in 1998. The Asian manmade fiber industry should recover after 1999. South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong will experience the greatest decline in demand. Except for acrylic fiber, production will surpass mill demand in Asia, excluding Japan, for most manmade fibers.
