Japanese futon manufacturers are buying greater amounts of higher quality scoured wool and less recycled material. Imports of scoured wool increased 1.3 percent to 6,942 tons in 2000, whereas overall takeup of scoured wool declined 14 percent to 6,000 tons. Industry officials predict that demand for better quality wool will increase in 2001. The United Kingdom, which exported no scoured wool to Japan in 1999, exported 1,017 tons in 2000. Imports from Argentina, a leading supplier of recycled wool, declined from 1,028 tons to 305 tons.
