Researchers at the United State Department of Agriculture developed and patented a device that reduces cotton bale packaging forces, which can reach 800,000 pounds, and should reduce cotton bale packaging costs. Conventional packaging involves pressing the cotton and wrapping six or eight metal or plastic bale ties around the bale for stability in shipping and handling. The breakage is a problem and requires repair, costing up to $35 per bale. The device reduces the force required to compress cotton bales to 500,000 pounds with hydraulic motors and pumps. Integration into existing ginning lines is not expensive. The device can also be used in other industries that compress loose materials, such as plastics, paper, and manmade fibers.
