Chemical manufacturers use biological manufacturingmethods to develop renewable feedstocks and environmentally friendly manufacturing processes. Mutagenesis and recombinant technologies yield commercially viable chemical and polymer manufacturing processes. BASF uses biocatalysis to manufacture vitamin B-2 and lysine. It achieved a 20 percent productivity increase from its Ashbya gossypi vitamin generating fungus. BASF's ChiPros business group focuses on the biocatalytic generation of chiral intermediates. Chevron Research & Technology and Maxygen are studying the bioconversion of methane to methanol. Eastman Chemcial and Genecor use two step aqueous biocatalysis to manufacture ascorbic acid. DuPont and Celanese are developing polymers based on corn sugar instead of petroleum feedstocks.
