The 1999 ITMF report on cotton contamination states that 21 percent of cotton inspected was moderately to severely contaminated. Cotton cleaners detect and remove contaminants that demonstrate contrast in color or brightness, but fail to detect approximately 50 percent of transparent or weakly colored contaminants, such as polypropylene and polyethylene packing films. Research at the University of Technology in Dresden, Germany, developed a camera system that detects these contaminants, identifying color contrast by the reflection of visible light and near infrared spectra. The system inspects cotton tufts moving at speeds of 20 meters per second in a continuous process. 5 refs.
