To improve the potential of kenaf fibers as a biodegradable raw material for nonwoven fabrics, an experiment determined the chemical composition of kenaf fibers treated with sodium hydroxide and softeners (Sofuran S and 4) and measured the physical properties of nonwoven kenaf/rayon fabric blends manufactured with water jets. Alkali treatment removed impurities but the fibers remained too coarse for carding machines. Softening treatment under neutral conditions yielded a finer fiber without reducing fiber strength. 80/20 and 50/50 kenaf/rayon fabrics exhibited physical properties similar to those of rayon fabrics. 4 refs.
