Measurements of breakthrough time and time averaged vapor transmission rate determined the permeation resistance of chlorinated polyethylene used in chemical protective clothing against the aerospace fuels hydrazine, monomethylhydrazine, and dimethylhydrazine under two exposure scenarios: 2 hour fuel vapor exposure and a liquid fuel splash followed by a 2 hour vapor exposure. Assessment of suit performance at the part per billion level required cation exchange high performance liquid chromatography with amperometric detection, which determined the lowest measurable time averaged vapor transmission rate. The maximum allowable permeation rates of hydrazine fuels through chlorinated polyethylene were 0.1 nanogram per square centimeter per minute for encapsulating protective suits with breathing air flow rates of 5-9 scfm. Higher permeation rates could exceed the 10 parts per billion threshold limit value time weighted average. 5 refs.
