The Z index expresses weight irregularities in fiber assemblies and complements conventional measurements of this parameter. It has applications in wool fiber combing and spinning. Yamasaki developed the Z index in response to increased quality demand in these processes. It equals the coefficient of variation in fiber assembly weight multiplied by the Monfort index. Experiments processed European and Australian wool with a range of fiber properties, including fineness and length, and determined their Z indexes. The Z index permitted a satisfactory evaluation of the quality of the operations and might have applications in the development of an industrial standard. 5 refs.
