An introduction to materials recovery and recycling during manmade noncellulosic fiber manufacture addresses the chemical processing of nylon 6 waste, including the recovery of caprolactam by thermal decomposition, of nylon 6 through depolymerization-filtration-repolymerization, nylon 6 through reprecipitation, and lactam across the entire production process; chemical processing of nylon 66 waste; depolymerization of polyester, including conversion of polyester to terephthalic acid or dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), DMT recovery via glycolysis of polyethylene terephthalate, recovery of DMT via polyester methanolysis, and gaseous byproducts in polyethylene terephthalate manufacture; mechanical waste processing, including processing of polyester bottle granulate and polymer blocks, compaction of filament waste, and yarn to staple processing; direct extruder processing of yarn and film wastes; and recovery and cleaning of gases and fluids. 36 refs.
