A recycling process converts postconsumer polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coated fabrics into powdered plasticized PVC and fibers. Solvay patented the recycling process in 1998 and granted an exclusive license to Ferrari SA. The Vinyloop mechanical recycling process uses a solvent to separate PVC from the fibers. A grinding machine cuts the coated fabrics into pellets 20-60 millimeters long. A ketonic solvent at 115 degrees centigrade dissolves the plasticized PVC, leaving the polyethylene terephthalate fibers (PET) in suspension. Filtration and drying recover the PET fibers, and precipitation recovers the PVC. Spin filtering the precipitate yields a free flowing powder suitable for compounding.
