A study examined online testing methods for evaluating cotton raw materials prior to spinning. Researchers identified technologies applicable to the development of online systems for testing foreign matter, vegetable content, stickiness, and fiber fineness, but could not identify systems adaptable to online measurement of such properties as length and strength. Image analysis and near infrared spectroscopy provide optimal methods for online testing, including the measurement of fiber moisture content. Technologies for measuring trash content and stickiness could lead to the development of additional online systems.
