Researchers investigated if Baker's mathematical relationships for predicting lint waste and cleaning efficiency, developed in 1977, remained valid for modern cotton varieties. Experimental results confirmed the relationships established by the equations, but indicated that such production parameters as variety and location reduced their accuracy. Maximizing processing efficiency requires a real time measurement of lint cleaner waste. Ginners that incorrectly use the United States Department of Agriculture's recommendations for split stream lint cleaning reduced cleaning efficiency by 6-17 percent. 9 refs.
