Influence of Stick Machines on Turnout and Quality of Stripper Cotton.

Researchers investigated the effects of stick machine use at the cotton gin on lint turnout and high volume instrument (HVI) properties. An experiment replicated four harvesting and ginning treatments four times in a randomized complete block experiment. Analysis of variance procedures and differences among treatment means separated by the Student-Newman-Keuls test at the 0.05 level of significance evaluated the experiment. Bypassing the second stick machine in the seed cotton cleaning system did not affect HVI properties or lint turnout of field cleaned cotton. Bypassing a stick machine increased lint turnout of nonfield cleaned cotton, but adversely affected reflectance, HVI trash area, and leaf grade. 5 refs.
