The cotton industry in the San Joaquin Valley introduced the global positioning system and inertial navigation system for the automatic steering of tractors and other agricultural vehicles in 2000, reducing capital expenditures and variable input costs. These vehicles can receive subinch differential global positioning system signals from base stations located on or near the cotton fields. Continous operation without marker arm devices is possible under normal and foggy conditions to list seedbeds with subinch accuracy, reducing the number of tractors and equipment required and increasing efficiency by up to 35 percent. Other advantages include increases in ground speed and equipment width, reduced fuel and fuel related emissions, and reduced labor and tractor hours per acre.
