Factor analysis is suitable for analyzing interrelationships among a large number of variables and for explaining these variables in terms of common underlying dimensions. A preliminary study on exploratory data analysis in cotton quality management applied factor analysis to a database comprising values of fiber micronaire, length, uniformity ratio, tenacity, elongation, count, twist, coefficient of variation, thin places, thick places, neps, hairiness, tenacity, elongation, and energy of rupture. A case study using a spinning mill in Portugal identified a first factor correlated with fiber properties and yarn twist and a second factor related to yarn properties. 11 refs.
