A review of developments in the manmade fiber industry focuses on the history of the sector, biomimetism, heat protection, fibers encapsulated with phase change materials, bifunctional fibers (therapeutic properties, color change with temperature, and perfumed fibers), protection from ultraviolet radiation (colorants, titanium dioxide pigments, ceramics, and blocking agents), antibacterial properties, electrical conductivity, impermeable and respirable membranes, and laminates with thermal memory. An important trend in the manmade fiber industry is the use of raw materials other than petroleum, such as polylactic acid and 1.3-propanediol. 9 refs.
