Such meta-aramid fibers as DuPont's Nomex and Teijin's Conex have applications in flame resistant apparel and filter fabrics. DuPont's Kevlar, Akzo's Twaron, and Teijin's Technora para-aramid fibers feature high tenacity, modulus, and heat resistance, as well as strength and modulus values three to seven times higher than meta aramid fibers. Carbon fibers manufactured from polyacrylonitrile or acrylic fibers have applications in composite reinforcement and heat resistant materials. DuPont's Teflon and Toray's Toyoflon fluorocarbon fibers combine heat resistance with a low friction coefficient. High density polyethylene fibers are similar to para-aramid fibers and have a specific gravity of 0.97. Other high performance fibers are glass, liquid crystal polymer, melamine, polybenzimidazole, polyphenylenebenzobisoxazole, nylon, polyacetal, gel extruded polyvinylalcohol, polyphenylene sulfide, polyether etherketone, ceramic, basalt, silicon carbide, Courtaulds' Amicor, Unitika's Microart and Eslex, Toyobo's Arusura, chitin, and metallocene fibers. 20 refs.
