Microfibers feature low bending stiffness, low single filament strength, and increased filament surface area. Acrylic microfibers produce ultrafine knit and chenille fabrics with silk-like hand, as well as ultrafine woven fabrics with excellent drape. Modern extruders manufacture microfilaments with finenesses as low as 0.1 dtex. Methods of manufacture include modified conventional extrusion, super drawing, fiber surface peeling, and polymer blend extrusion. As denier decreases, fabric resilience, abrasion resistance, and resistance to slippage improve. Applications include shirts, jackets, suits, rain coats, ski and sailing apparel, sweatshirts, jogging suits, sleeping bags, tents, upholstery, filters, and curtains. 3 refs.
