Researchers grew the basidiomycetes Phaenerochaete chrysosporium and Ceriporiopsis subvermispora on jute stick-the agricultural residue of jute-and evaluated these fungi as delignifying agents for the pulping industry. The TAPPI method determined the lignin, alpha-cellulose, and hemicellulose content of the jute stick before and after treatment. P. chrysosporium delignified 57 percent more lignin than did C. subvermispora, but caused more cellulose damage. Cultural and genetic modification, however, reduced this damage. Blending delignified jute stick with high quality pulp improved paper quality. Increasing the alkali content during treatment had little effect on the quality of the resultant pulp. 5 refs.
