De Montfort University's Yarn CAD computer aided design system features yarn structure and appearance algorithms and yarn appearance display software. The algorithms require such parameters as linear density, yarn twist level, bending rigidity, fiber diameters, fiber compression properties, and yarn and fiber twist direction. The system converts the geometric structure of the yarn into an array of quadrilateral facets. A graphics display unit simulates yarn appearance, including yarn texture. An image archive provides quick retrieval of yarn data, including manufacturing and developmental notes, comments, and yarn images. A yarn report summarizes all relevant data on any yarn. A color palette and image manipulation software allow optimal control of visual images. 6 refs.
