Cotton Incorporated's 14th annual EFS conference attracted more than 300 participants from 140 companies. Topics included raw cotton and cotton apparel market reports, cotton fiber quality, developments in cotton breeding and genetics, and developments in yarn spinning technology. A survey of consumer attitudes and purchasing patterns indicated that chain stores account for 24 percent of retail apparel sales; department stores, 23 percent; and mass merchants, 20 percent. Cotton was the preferred sleepwear fabric of 70 percent of respondents, 37 percent of whom sleep in a T shirt and boxers, 26 percent of whom sleep in pajamas, 16 percent of whom sleep in nightgowns, and 8 percent of whom sleep in underwear. Apparel retailers Abercrombie & Fitch and American Eagle Outfitters had sales increases of 29 percent and 41 percent, respectively, in 2002. Tables present data on cotton exports and cotton yield.
