Exposure to atmospheric oxygen, particularly at high temperatures, and light degrade polymers via oxidation, defined as the reaction of the polymer with oxygen at temperatures at which thermal degradation is negligible. Combustion is the reaction between oxygen and volatile products of thermal decomposition. Model compound studies indicate that polymers do not oxidize significantly at temperatures of normal use; however, oxidation remains a major problem, requiring some form of stabilization. The presence of impurities and structural defects in polymers, particularly after processing, are responsible for this instability. Oxidation is a slow reaction between the solid polymer and a gas, and its kinetics are complex. 6 refs.
