An overview of the advantages and disadvantages of naturally colored cotton fibers addresses genetic crossing, report variability, color versus quality, dye alternatives, difficulties in commercialization, colorfastness, physical properties, fiber functionality, and consumer preferences. Naturally colored cotton fibers are weaker than white cotton fibers, but have acceptable fiber length and uniformity. Most colored upland cottons are very fine and soft. Their physical characteristics contribute to such fabric and yarn properties as hand, drape, and color. Breeding for improved strength and the development of more effective manufacturing methods will increase the applications of colored cottons. Future research will focus on genetic engineering to develop new colors. 30 refs.
