Hemp (Cannabis sativa) grows quickly in most soils and climates. Hemp fibers exhibit high tensile strength; low deformation under axial, flexural, and torsional forces; low dry and wet elongation; antibacterial and antistatic properties; high hygroscopicity; and high dye absorption. Mechanical, chemical, and enzymatic treatments reduce the fineness of hemp fibers, which are easily separated and refined. Fine hemp yarns are possible, but most fine hemp yarns are blends of hemp and cotton or manmade fibers. Hemp fibers are processable on open end and Dref spinning machines. Reducing the manufacturing costs of hemp fabrics requires modification of their processability properties to those required by sophisticated wool and cotton spinning systems. Hemp fibers have potential applications in value added textiles. 14 refs.
