Kenaf fibers derived from the bark of Hibiscus cannabinus L. are biodegradable, renewable, and environmentally safe. An application for these fibers is in the manufacture of moldable nonwoven fabrics for automotive interiors. The presence of lignin and pectin in raw kenaf requires chemical retting after mechanical harvesting. Research at the United States Southern Regional Research Center developed treatments for forage harvester Tainug-2 kenaf, consisting of short, 1.5-3.0 inch fibers, and naturally retted Everglades 41, consisting of ribbons 40-50 inches in length. The chemical retting cycle of the ribbons was shorter than that of the fibers. The resultant fibers were processable through a cotton carding machine. Hot water finish yield fibers suitable for air laying and needle punching processes. 16 refs.
