Surface Features of Mineral-Filled Polypropylene Filaments

An experiment investigated the effects of mineral fillers (talc, wollastonite, calcium carbonate, and titanium dioxide) on the surface properties of polypropylene filaments. Scanning electron microscopic analysis of composite filaments revealed that mineral fillers altered the surface properties of polypropylene filaments. An increase in the volume fraction of most mineral fillers increased the roughness of the filament surface. Some filler particles were evident on the filament surfaces, but agglomerations of filler particles occurred directly under the surface. Titanium dioxide filler had the least effect on the surface properties of the composite filament. 1 ref.
