Biodegradable plastics, which decompose into low molecular weight compounds when exposed to microorganisms existing in nature, are nonpolluting. Polylactic acid (PLA) resins have the highest melting point among biodegradable plastics and exhibit high transparency, stiffness, and tenacity. Common applications of PLA resins include fibers, nonwoven fabrics, films, and plastic molds. Cargill Dow LLC, the largest supplier of PLA resin, will complete construction of a 140,000 ton PLA plant in Nebraska in 2001. Kanebo Gohsen manufactures and markets the PLA fiber Lactron, which possesses properties similar to those of nylon and polyester fibers. Unitika manufactures hard and soft PLA films, Teramac PLA fibers, and covered PLA yarns. Kuraray manufactures Plastarch PLA fibers and is researching applications for filament yarn and staple fiber manufactured from homopolymers.
