Nucleating Agents for Polytrimethylene Terephthalate

Nucleating agents can increase the crystallization rate of polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT) to that of polybutylene terephthalate by providing sites for primary crystal nucleation. Differential scanning calorimetric analysis of the isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization of PTT revealed an upward shift in the peak temperature of the exothermic peak and a peak sharpness that confirmed nucleation. United States Patent 5,431,972 describes a nucleation index that is a function of crystallinity, and peak temperature range. A table lists 17 nucleating agents suitable for increasing the crystallinity rate of PTT.
