World cotton prices fell 39 percent from 2000-2001 due to the slowing world economy, reduced consumer demand, and increased cotton production. Increased production resulted from favorable weather conditions, supportive government policies, and imperfectly integrated markets. Northern hemisphere production increased 12 percent in 2001-2000. World cotton production should amount to 96.9 million bales in 2001-2002, whereas consumption should amount to 91.6 million bales. United States cotton acreage increased 4 percent to 16.2 million acres in 2001. The 2001-2002 cotton area in the People's Republic of China increased 29 percent over that of 1999-2000. United States cotton mill consumption should decrease 9 percent in 2001-2002. Current low prices should reduce world cotton production in 2002-2003.
