Overproduction of cotton remains a world problem. Cotton prices are low, and government subsidies must continue. United States production of cotton in 2001 was approximately 20.05 million bales, but United States consumption in 2002 is expected to be 7.6 million bales. More than 11.0 million bales are registered and approximately 9.8 million bales will be shipped during the year. A carryover of 8.7 million bales is likely due to a 6 million bale carryover from the previous season. World production is expected to fall in 2002, but an increase in world consumption should drive prices upward.
