Depressed cotton prices and lower crop insurance prices for cotton may encourage fewer acres of United States cotton, but production might not decrease enough to raise prices to an acceptable level. Worldwide oversupply in 2001 drove cotton prices to their lowest level in 30 years. To balance supply with demand, particularly with the increasing competition of manmade fibers, growers should reduce cotton acreage by 25 percent in the United States and by at least 10 percent worldwide.
