The November 2001 seasonally adjusted daily rate of United States cotton consumption amounted to 28,057 bales, a decrease from the October 2001 rate of 28,927 bales. Domestic mills purchased a low volume of cotton for February 2002 through July 2002 delivery. Demand for ring spun yarn was light, whereas demand for open end yarn was moderate. Weak retail sales in the home furnishings sector resulted in an increase in inventories. United States cotton stocks on hand at the end of November 2001 amounted to 335,792 bales and stocks held in public storage and compresses amounted to 14.7 million bales. Active spindles totaled 3.2 million. October 2001 United States cotton exports amounted to 378,000 bales, an increase from the same period in 2000. The United States imported 400 bales of cotton in October 2001, primarily from Egypt.
