World cotton production will increase 1.5 million tons in 2001-2002 to a record 20.9 million tons. Consumption, however, will decline to 19.6 million tons. Analysts predict that the Cotlook A Index will decline from $0.57 to $0.45. Because prices will remain below the cost of production, world production will decline by 1.8 million tons to 19.1 million tons in 2002-2003. Cotton production in the United States, the People's Republic of China, and Japan is expected to decline 13 percent, 12 percent, and 8 percent, respectively.
