Classification of cotton fiber samples estimates the quality of cotton in a bale. Classers assign color grade, leaf grade, and extraneous matter content based on United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) classification standards. High volume instrument analysis of bale samples provides information on fiber conditioning, length, strength, micronaire, color, and trash content. A USDA check test program calculates the average measurements of participating laboratories and compares participant data with standard values. Factors affecting quality measurements include cultivar selection, harvest preparation, ginning efficiency, and storage conditions. Classification methods for American pima cotton are similar to those for upland cotton except that pima cotton requires the use of roller gins instead of saw gins. 35 refs.
