Cotton cultivation requires large amounts of agrochemicals and irrigation. A comparison of cotton cultivation practices uses environmental indicators to analyze Texas High Plains cotton cultivation methods and uses life cycle assessment to compare different irrigation practices. The Texas High Plain cotton growing area consists of 1.4-1.6 million hectares of irrigated mid staple stripper cotton varieties with a ten year average yield of 485 pounds per acre. An analysis of cultivation regimes, irrigation method, and agrochemical inputs for the 2001 season showed that a combination of organic cotton cultivation and conservation tillage achieved the best sustainability. Life cycle assessment evaluated the effects of pesticides used in the cultivation regimes. Farmer's individual management practices had the most significant environmental effects. 18 refs.
