Wood fibers exhibit excellent strength properties, but can have structural defects that reduce their strength bearing capacity after processing. An introduction to the morphology of wood fibers and the potential for improving the mechanical properties of paper products addresses microfibrillar structure, polymer ultrastructural arrangement, cell wall structure, and fiber irregularities. A better knowledge of the ultrastructure of the wood fiber wall and the properties of its constituent polymers would elucidate wood fiber assembly, clarifying the influence of structural anomalies on fiber properties and identifying ways of combating the development of these properties during wood fiber processing. 28 refs.
