An overview of biodegradable polymers addresses biomedical polymers and biodegradable polymers in polymer waste management. Polymer biodegradation proceeds via hydrolysis and oxidation. Most biodegradable manmade and natural polymers contain hydrolyzable groups along the main chains, which control stereoconfiguration, hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity balance, and conformational flexibility. The amorphous regions of hydrolyzable polymers degrade before the crystalline and crosslinked regions. 127 refs.
