An overview of polymer degradation techniques and mechanisms of focuses on inert and degradable polymers, chemiluminescence measurements of polymer oxidative changes, and chromatographic analyses of low molecular weight compounds in polymers. Most bulk polymers are inert in character or have antiageing compounds added during manufacture. Such polymers as polyolefins are susceptible to photooxidation, which leads to carbonyl compounds. Photooxidation products include radicals, vinyl and ketone end groups, and esters. Norrish type 1 cleavage forms radicals that react with alkoxyl radicals on polyethylene chains. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, chemiluminescence, gas chromatography, and mass spectroscopy monitor changes that occur during polymer degradation. 24 refs.
